Youth Cooperators Empowered on Vegetable Production for Domestic and Export Markets.

Across the world, agriculture is the mainstay of many economies. Apart from ensuring food security for populations, it provides jobs in huge numbers and accounts for a significant proportion, the GDP of most countries.
Investment in agriculture is, therefore, a prerequisite for any country that wants to make social progress and achieve economic development.
On Monday 21st to Friday 25th August, 2023 the Directorate of University Farms, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in collaboration with Nigeria Export Promotion Council, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and Ogun State Cooperative Federation Limited organized 5-days Capacity Building Workshop on Prospect of vegetable production for domestic and export markets.
As part of the efforts of OGSCOFED Youth Cooperative Multipurpose Society to improve the skills of her members, two delegates were able to attend the training, they were Mr. Samuel Isaiah and Mrs. Fehintope Florence.
Successful Vegetable Husbandry, to a large extent, is a function of the skill and knowledge base of the grower and effective deployment of the knowledge to efficiently manage available resources and other environmental factors.
Vegetable production differs from other crop production enterprises, as by their nature are perishable, hence must be free from blemishes and any impurity. Cultural operations must be accomplished in a precise and timely manner to deliver high-quality products to the markets on schedule.
Farmers’ profit and loss can be affected by uncontrollable environmental factors, market fluctuations, pest and disease infestations, and phytosanitry regulations. Therefore, farmers must pay adequate attention to variables that they can control. Timely and careful execution of cultural practices enhances farmer’s productivity and income, as it improves production efficiency, lowers production cost, and increases profitability.
Like most successful businesses, careful planning greatly enhances the rate of success and profitability.
