Pair of signed studio pottery ashtrays by Robert Maxwell (California, USA). Hand-built stoneware with textured unglazed exteriors and molten-glaze interiors—classic Mid-Century Modern / Brutalist design. Irregular round forms with hand-cut fluted rims; one approx 7″ diameter, the other approx 6″ diameter.
Approximate Size:
Larger ashtray: ~7″ diameter × ~1.5″ high
Smaller ashtray: ~6″ diameter × ~1.5″ high
Signature: Both pieces are incised on the base “© Robert Maxwell”.
Period: Circa 1960s–1970s, California studio pottery.
Materials: Stoneware with fused/glass-effect glaze interior.
Both ashtrays show edge wear—small chips, nicks and abrasion around the rim consistent with vintage use.
The larger ashtray has a small chip / flake in the glazed centre area—visible in photos.
No major structural cracks noted; though the damage means the pair is priced accordingly.
