The majority of Early Cycladic sculptures are representations of women, some of which are carved with natural proportions while others are more idealised. This figurine is an example of the the "canonical" type, named for the the bent knees, tilted head, and crossed arms characteristic of an overwhelming number of figurines sharing similar features produced between 2800 - 2300 BC. Figurines of this type are named for their find spot, this one being from Naxos, and only vary is minor stylistic differences. She most likely would have been brightly painted and there are examples with painted remains that support this. most are found in burials they are presumably related to the dead.
