Noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "Chinatown Cable Car, Chinatown” and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The artist's view looks to the east, the famous old cable cars climbing the steep California Street hill, passing Chinatown's main street, Grant Avenue, while the buildings of the Financial District, and a tower of the Oakland Bay Bridge are seen in the far distance . Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth. Art education in the Bay Area followed, in the late 1920's, and by 1932 she was producing etchings, generally of familiar Bay Area scenes. She worked until at least the 1970's, when she moved to Pacific Grove near Carmel. These small etchings proved popular with visitors to San Francisco, who kept them as souvenirs, as they are now often found in places distant from California. 7.75x6.14”. Adhesive residue on top, 2 corners, and 2 sides, but will not be visible when matted.
