Hand-carved driftwood tree spirit face, signed Leslin ’82. The artist carved the features directly into the natural grain, letting the wood’s natural curves shape the beard, eyes, and expression. The Legend
Carvers have long believed that every fallen piece of wood keeps a trace of its life within the grain. When a spirit doesn’t fade, its face can sometimes be found waiting in the knots and curves of the wood. The carver’s role is simply to bring it forward.
It is also said that releasing the spirit through carving brings good luck to the home or place where the piece is displayed.
