Bessie Coleman was the first African American woman and the first Native American woman to earn a pilot's license in the United States, and the first African American to earn an international pilot's license in 1921. She was known for her flying tricks, and her nicknames included "Brave Bessie," "Queen Bess," and "The Only Race Aviatrix in the World". Coleman staged the first public flight by an African American woman in America on Labor Day, September 3, 1922.
