Two Antique Delft Blue Tiles, Hand-painted Dutch Tin-glazed Earthenware in decorative wood frames. 18th Century Holland made.
Framed Delftware or Delft Blue Tiles were first produced in the Netherlands in the late 16th century. Each one is an original, hand-painted blue motif on a white, opaque, and shiny tin glaze.
These are two very old Deflt tiles that someone has placed securely in wood frames. Research shows they could be anywhere between early 1800s & early 1900s. These are heavy compared to the new tiles of today. Ready to be hung on wall with wiring.
Initially, Delft tiles were used as decorative & protective elements around fireplaces in Dutch homes. The blue design against white background is characteristic of this pottery, aimed to replicate Asian porcelain. Delftware is cherished part of Dutch heritage & very collectible. See crazing & tiny & normal wear for antique tiles. Finished backs.
