October 1991 saw the debut of this third generation (FD3S) model of the RX-7 rotary engine sports car. Endowed with superb handling born of its 50:50 weight distribution, a key factor in the car's global success was the gorgeous curves of the body. Sales in North America began in 1993 with two models on offer including the R1, which had front and rear spoilers, a front tower bar on the strut suspension, and sports type shocks. With its high-performance low-profile tires, it recorded a 0-60mph time of 5.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14 seconds, leaving little doubt to its capabilities.
