NUC Creates Dept. of Cooperative and Rural Devt. Under the New University Curriculum
Quite notable among the restructured curriculum is the Department of Co-operative and Rural Development under the Faculty of Administration and Management
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has unveiled a newly restructured curriculum for Nigerian universities.
The National Universities Commission says the implementation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) begins this September 2023.
The CCMAS document is expected to guide institutions in the design of curricula for their programmes.
It also aims at bringing necessary innovations into the content and delivery of its programmes towards achieving the overall goals of education and training in the country.
Speaking at the Stakeholders’ Colloquium on CCMAS in Abuja recently, the acting Executive Secretary of NUC, Chris Maiyaki, said the document would reposition Nigerian universities to be among the best-rated in Africa.
Maiyaki said that CCMAS would make up 70 percent of the curriculum while the university decides what to include in the remaining 30 percent.
According to him, the implementation will help sharpen the future of the education sector.
”The role and development of the CCMAS is to ensure commitment in advancing our education and our great nation.
“NUC is primarily dedicated to ensuring quality and global competitiveness of Nigerian universities as well as the graduates we produce.
“The development of the CCMAS went through a painstaking process by bringing experts from our universities comprising of professors, regulatory bodies, Nigerian Economic Summit Group and all stakeholders.
“The CCMAS reflects global initiative that will equip graduates with knowledge and wherewithal that will advance the development of the nation,” he said.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, encouraged universities to make optimal use of the 30 percent university senate’s input.
Mamman advised universities to ensure that learning outcomes, skills as well and soft skills were acquired, irrespective of the core discipline.
He said that the skills must be readily applicable to the environment of the university, the country in particular, and the global community in general.
“There is no better place and time than now to develop a strategy that will guide tertiary institutions particularly universities in their mandate to provide appropriate manpower for the country.”
Universities in the country are expected to officially have 17 disciplines of faculties namely Administration and Management; Agriculture; Allied Health Sciences; Architecture; Arts; Basic Medical Sciences; Communications and Media Studies; Computing; Education; Engineering and Technology; Environmental Sciences; Law; Medicine and Dentistry; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Sciences; Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.
Quite notable among the restructured programme is the Department of Co-operative and Rural Development to be under the Faculty of Administration and Management
Other noticeable points to look out for in the analysis made of the new curriculum include the unbundling of mass communications to create a distinct discipline of Communications comprising degree programmes in Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Film and Multimedia, Information and Media Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Mass Communication, Public Relations and Strategic Communication; Agriculture was unbundled into programmes in its contributing components of B.Sc Agricultural Economics, B.Sc. Animal Science, B.Sc. Crop Science and B.Sc. Soil Science;
The unbundling of Architecture and introduction of Architecture as a new discipline with programmes like Architecture, Architectural Technology, Furniture Design, Interior Architecture Design, Landscape Architecture and Naval architecture; The split of the Basic Medical Sciences discipline into two – Basic Medical Sciences and Allied Health Sciences;
Attached to this article is the full list of programmes in their respective disciplines.
