The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdulahhi CON recently held a significant meeting with the management of the Federal Colleges of Cooperative in Nigeria. The meeting aimed to discuss the revamping and revitalization of our cooperative ecosystem and to address various critical issues affecting the cooperative sector, especially farmers cooperatives in the country . It was an energizing session with innovative ideas and a shared commitment to enhancing the cooperative landscape. .

During the meeting, the minister delved into the various aspects of the cooperative ecosystem and brainstormed strategies to make it more robust and efficient. Every aspect was thoroughly examined to ensure comprehensive reform, from empowering grassroots cooperatives to streamlining administrative processes.

He emphasized the government’s commitment as enshrined in the Renewed Hope Agenda to supporting and promoting cooperative activities in the agricultural sector. He highlighted the vital role of cooperatives in enhancing the productivity and livelihoods of smallholder farmers and rural communities.

The minister also lauded the efforts of the Federal Colleges of Cooperative in providing quality education and training to the stakeholders, emphasized the need for continuous capacity building and skill development to ensure the sustainable growth of the cooperative movement in Nigeria.

Additionally, the meeting provided an opportunity for the management of the Federal Colleges of Cooperative to discuss their achievements, challenges and present proposals for further improving cooperative education and training in the country. The minister assured them of the government’s support in overcoming these challenges and implementing necessary reforms to enhance the effectiveness of the cooperative institutions.

The highlight of the meeting was when the Honorable Minister formed the Technical Working Group – a dedicated working committee that comprise of all the Federal Cooperative Colleges Provosts, The Federal Director of Cooperatives (FDC), Executive Secretary of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) and the Special Assistant (SA) on Cooperative Matters & Farmers Welfare to the Honorable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security who is to Coordinate the Ministers’ TWG were tasked with delving deeper into the necessary reforms and revamping initiatives. This committee will serve as the driving force behind implementing the Ministry’s revitalization efforts, ensuring that our vision translates into tangible action.

The Minister was thrilled about the potential impact of these reforms and eager to see the transformative changes they will bring to our cooperative ecosystem. Together, we’re shaping a brighter future for cooperatives in Nigeria, one step at a time.
