LASCOCO Wins Big at the 4th Nigerian National Cooperative Awards

The Lagos State Cooperative College (LASCOCO) dictated the pace and outshined other nominees in the category in which they were nominated, as they won big at the 4th National Cooperative Award ceremony held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja organized by the Cooperative Rating & Award Society of Nigeria (CRASoN) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development (FMARD).
LASCOCO won two of the Most Prestigious Awards, the Most Outstanding Cooperative Institution of the Year, and the pragmatic college provost won the Most Outstanding Provost of the Year amongst other Colleges and Provosts of Cooperative Institutions in Nigeria
Most Outstanding Cooperative Institution/Provost/HOD of the Year – The award goes to the Institution of higher learning that offers Cooperative as a Course of Study either in Cooperative Colleges (State or Federal) or Department of Cooperatives in (Universities and, or Polytechnics) and, or the Institutions Head, that provides a conducive environment for students to thrive better at learning the course and putting practical Coop knowledge and managerial skills to play. By facilitating or have facilitated at least one Student Consumer Cooperative, Savings Club, and, or Cooperative Farms at their institution.
The Lagos State Cooperative College (LASCOCO) was established under section 2 of the Cooperative College Law of Lagos State to fulfill the mandate of Training, Research, Learning, and Management of Information Communication Technology to Cooperators and members of the public at both Local and International levels.
Established and Commissioned on July 12, 2012, and the bill passed into law in 2018, the College is challenged to provide skilled manpower that will assist in the realization of the mission of the State Government to eradicate poverty and promote the economic growth of the State. It is also poised to provide an enabling environment for the provision of sound Cooperative Education, Economic Empowerment, and the acquisition of appropriate entrepreneurial skills.
The major objective behind the establishment of the Cooperative College is the need to protect the investment of the citizenry in the Cooperative Movement through:
- The provision of specialized short-duration capacity-building interventions to officials of the various forms of Cooperatives.
- The creation of a platform for young Nigerians to realize career aspirations in Cooperative Studies and the Management of Cooperative Societies in Lagos State and in Nigeria at large.
This will be achieved through:
- Enshrine the principle of prudence, transparency, and accountability in the Cooperative.
- Encourage the act of cooperation and increase the knowledge and skill of Cooperative toward reducing fraud and conflict within Cooperative Societies in Lagos.
- Equip the trustee and management Committee for effective management of their societies in Lagos.
- Developing a critical mass of personnel through capacity building for the effective operation of the business and account of cooperatives.
- Continuous education and training for co-operators in accordance with the 5th Principle of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).
- Better structure and managerial skills for committee members in the cooperatives.
