Kano State Governor Commits to Supporting Cooperatives to Alleviate Poverty

The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has promised to support and empower Cooperative Societies in the State in order for them to be able to regain their influence as agents of sustainable development to meet their members; socio-economic needs and aspirations as well as alleviate poverty in the state. He said this during a meeting with the delegation of the Kano State Cooperative Federation at the state government house on Thursday, in commemoration of the 2023 International Cooperative Day Celebrations in the State.
“He pledged its commitment to assist Cooperative Societies in their efforts to combat poverty and regain their influence while emphasizing on the importance of Cooperative Societies as vehicles through which citizens can improve their lives and contribute to the overall development of their community and nation.
“Governor Yusuf announced that the state government would engage Cooperative Societies in designing poverty eradication and sustainable development programs.
“Furthermore, committees would be established to review the activities of Cooperative Desk Officers in each Local Government Area, while desk officers would be introduced in major markets such as Dawanau, Kantin Kwari, and Yan Lemo among others to guide and support cooperative activities,”.
The President of the Kano State Cooperative Federation, Musa Hassan Aikawa, spoke on behalf of the delegation and emphasized the significance of cooperatives in enhancing the lives of their members.
In his speech, he highlighted the fact that Kano State has over 2.8 million cooperative members, primarily consisting of women and young people. Aikawa requested intervention from the state government to develop strategies for reducing the high unemployment rate in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Solid Minerals, Alh. Mairo Audi Danbatta whose ministry is the supervising body for all cooperatives in the state expressed solidarity with the cooperative movement and encouraged the youth to embrace cooperative business ventures as a means of progress and reducing unemployment in Kano State.
Governor Yusuf, represented by his Deputy Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo during the meeting .emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting Cooperative Societies in their endeavors to alleviate poverty and regain their influence.
Speaking at the meeting, Governor Yusuf’s Deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, reiterated the administration’s primary goal of eradicating poverty in Kano State.
He affirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities among all senatorial zones of the State.
The meeting took place as part of the activities commemorating the 2023 International Day of Cooperatives, which highlighted the significant role of cooperatives in promoting economic and social development. It was attended by several dignitaries, including government officials and representatives from educational institutions related to cooperative activities in Kano State.
