FIRS Cooperative Advocates Harmonise Taxation Regime

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been called upon to make a difference by way of tax harmonization in order to promote investment in Nigeria.

Speaking recently at the 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Federal Inland Revenue Cooperative Society Limited in Abuja, the president, Dr Gadzama  Mamuda, urged the federal government not to tinker with multiple taxation policies of the previous administrations which has brought businesses in the country to their knees.

Gadzama lamented that rather than encouraging individuals and corporate organizations to expand their businesses thereby promoting investment and employment, most people who could not cope have folded up only to relocate to neighboring countries.

He stated that to calibrate investment and give hope to the hopeless, the new administration should cut down on multiple taxations.

While commending President Tinubu for the bold step taken on the fuel subsidy regime, he said the president should investigate those behind Nigeria’s economic woes and bring them to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

He also commended the government for the recent directive to the effect that approval for any payment to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) must be obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) unlike in the past when such payments were made through mere phone calls.

Gadzama, fondly called ‘Mr. Project’ by fellow cooperative society members, attributed his success in the last two years in office to the support his team enjoys from members, saying: “The last few years have been wonderful because we are transparent and truthful in the running of the association.”

According to him, the present administration has embarked on a mass housing scheme for staff members in FCT, Abuja, and other states of the federation such as Jos, Enugu, Port Harcourt, and KanO In the area of loan matters, he disclosed that all outstanding loan arrears have been settled while new ones are being processed within 30 working days.

He assured members that the upgrading of the cooperative accounting is in progress.
