COWAN Registered Six Cooperative Societies, Kickstarts 41st Anniversary Celebration

…targets rural women with tech skills for development

Country Women Association of Nigeria (COWAN), has said that it will focus on empowering rural women with technological innovations skills for improved livelihoods.

National President of COWAN, Princess Ade Ogunleye made this known at a media and stakeholders’ interaction ahead of activities marking the 41st anniversary of the Non Governmental Organisation, (NGO), in Abuja.

She said one of the best ways to empower rural women is to through systemic technological innovations that could be of optimal benefit for overall national development.

In a communique signed by the Chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Dorcas James, Ogunleye said “COWAN will celebrate its 41st anniversary under the theme “Technological Innovation for Nigerian Women Development: Impacting all from the Grassroot in line with the vision of our founder.”

“Historically, COWAN was created in 1982 in Akure Ondo State by our visionary leader, the late Chief Mrs. Bisi Ogunleye (OFR).

“She has gathered women irrespective of rural or urban areas to join efforts to tackle the common hindrances that affect their livelihoods.

She explains that through its years of existence, “COWAN registered six cooperative societies, having a total membership of 225 women.

“A magnificent journey through consistency, commitment, and cooperation is now enrooted nationwide, especially in the rural communities and the Association now has over 3.5 million members.

Established in 1982 in Akure Ondo State, COWAN seeks to tackle the common challenges facing women and vulnerable groups.
