Odua Cooperative Conglomerate Seeks Grants to Boost South-West Economy

The Odua Cooperative Conglomerate is exploring opportunities to access grants and international funds to revitalize the cooperative movement in South-West Nigeria. This initiative was announced by the conglomerate’s President, Chief Felix Ajibode, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State.
A New Era of Cooperation
The meeting was convened to discuss the benefits and opportunities arising from the recent World Meets in Giessen Conference, hosted by IHK Global in Germany. The conference brought together representatives from over 150 countries, including Nigeria, to share knowledge and best practices in cooperative development. Chief Ajibode expressed concern that the cooperative movement in Nigeria has not received the same level of government support it enjoyed during the era of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Premier of Western Nigeria.
A Call to Action
To move the cooperative movement forward, Chief Ajibode emphasized the need to explore alternative funding sources, including international grants and loans from donor agencies. He approved the constitution of a committee to develop an action plan and framework for the South-West Cooperative Conglomerate, with a mandate to submit a report within 30 days.
Government Support
Representatives from various state governments, including Oyo, Ogun, and Osun, expressed their commitment to supporting the conglomerate’s efforts. The Oyo State Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives, and Industry, Adebisi Adeniyi, assured that Governor ‘Seyi Makinde would support the conglomerate’s initiatives. Similarly, the Osun State Commissioner for Cooperative and Empowerment, Chief Bayo Ogungbangbe, stated that Governor Ademola Adeleke would be open to ideas that drive the progress and stability of the conglomerate.
A Visionary Model
The cooperative model, which was once a driving force behind the economic development of the old Western Region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s leadership, is being revisited. Through cooperatives, agricultural production was enhanced, employment was generated, and a cooperative bank was established. The Odua Cooperative Conglomerate’s initiative has the potential to revive the cooperative movement and contribute to the economic growth of South-West Nigeria.
